About

HeatherI'm Heather Gibbons, a budding new media developer located in Calgary, Alberta. While I’m currently a student in SAIT’s New Media Production and Design program, I’ll be graduating shortly (April 2011). I've had a life-long interest in being creative and enjoy working hard to realize a vision, whether it is my own or someone else's. This love only grew when I discovered the digital medium and from then on, it was my goal to become talented in the visual field.

I work off a combination of skills learned through my lessons and my own personal drive to continue to learn and push beyond my current abilities. While my main abilities involve illustrating and web design, I'm skilled with and very interested in working with Flash to create interactive media, as well as creating models using Autodesk's 3DS Max.

In my spare time, I enjoy learning (especially about biology and astronomy), reading, and playing the occasional video or computer game. I like to bake and travel, and while I have four dachshunds and two parrots, I’m also fond of more unusual and generally less liked animals.

What I Work With

While I generally work with Apple hardware and software, I’m comfortable in both Windows and Mac OS X.

At home I work with a Mid-2010 i7 iMac, an additional Dell monitor, a Wacom Intuos3 tablet, and Shure headphones for audio.

All websites I create are coded by hand in a simple editor like SubEthaEdit, using valid XHTML and CSS, with recent integration of PHP as I navigate and learn this language.

I am highly proficient at using most Adobe software, with certification in Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Flash CS5. Adobe Certified Associate

Experience

I was fortunate enough to work with Agoge Inc’s Subeta between 2006 and 2008. Subeta is a very visually-based social game with high standards for its art. My role as a universal artist involved creating illustrations for various areas of the site, from small works such as forum icons, to more important and highly critiqued areas like the design of pets.

Between school years, I worked with SAIT’s Center for Instructional Technology and Development as an intern New Media Developer. This allowed me to use a more diverse set of skills, employing my knowledge of XHTML and CSS as well as my abilities in Adobe Flash, Photoshop, and Illustrator to ensure that students taking online courses recieved the best experience with their courses as possible.
